Hard Times A Comin ~ The Empire's Decline Consider: 1. Our Manufacturing has moved overseas The declines in some manufacturing sectors have more in common with a country undergoing saturation bombing during war than with a super-economy that is "the envy of the world." Paul Craig Roberts From: http://www.economyincrisis.org/articles/showarticle.asp?ID=99 <<<<<>>>>> 2. In 2001 the European Union gave 40% more doctorates in science and engineering than the United States and only 17% of all bachelors degrees were in natural science and engineering compared to 27% world wide and 52% for China. In 2010 China will pass us in the number of new engineers graduated each year. The US Commission on National Security for the 21st Century has said "The harsh fact is that the US need for the highest quality human capital in science, mathematics and engineering is not being met." In one recent study on international math and science tests given to 15 year olds in the US our students scored 24th out of 28 industrialized nations in math and 24th out of 40 countries in science. We tied with Latvia. In the year 2000 56% of China's undergraduate degrees were in the hard sciences, in the United States it was 17%. China will produce almost 6 times the number of engineers that we produce and Japan, with half our population will produce twice as many. Scientists and engineers make up less than 5% of our population but create up to 50% of our GDP. The United States is 49th in the world in literacy. Foreign applications to U.S. grad schools declined 28 percent last year. Foreign student enrollment on all levels have fallen for the first time in three decades. Yet they have increased greatly in Europe and China. Last year Chinese grad-school graduates in the U.S. dropped 56 percent, Indians 51 percent, South Koreans 28 percent. <<<<<>>>>> 3. Debt The chickens are going to come home to roost on all this debt. Except they ain't chickens anymore. They're vultures. And it is your wallet that they will be feasting on. <<<<<>>>>> 4. Global Peak Oil As the effects of oil well north of 120 dollars a barrel hits the economy inflation will rise causing the Fed to raise interest rates. In 1997 we paid 356 billion of interest on the 5.4 trillion in debt. In 2003 with extremely low interest rates we paid 318 billion to service 6.8 trillion in debt. Now the cost is going up. With the debt now around 9 trillion rising interest rates due to rising energy costs could be devastating. <<<<<>>>>> 5. Social Security/Medicare/Health Costs Baby Boomer retirement will put demographic stress on Social Security and our society. Benefits will probably have to be cut and there could be health care rationing. <<<<<>>>>> 6. American Empire. By Krassimir Petrov, Ph.D. 7. There are a host of problems that must be addressed. <<<<<>>>>> I believe we are at the peak of the empire game and that a decline is coming. Economically we are exposed with our demographics and debt. No challenger to our military domination is rising yet but we may loose a few conflicts to insurgencies. Guerilla/Insurgent warfare is probably the major form of conflict of the future. We spend as much as the rest of the world combined on the military and have the greatest military might but warfare is evolving. The strategies of 5th Generation warfare will address our overwhelming military superiority. But what of the economic core ??? The decade of 2010 will see a lot of convergences that could prove to be a very rough ride financially. 8.
